Municipal elections in all Ontario Municipalities, including the City of Ottawa, are governed by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
Hours Mon-Fri 8:30 am-4:30 pm
Eligibility A person is entitled to vote in a municipal election in the City of Ottawa if they are an eligible elector. On Voting Day, an eligible elector must be:
  • a resident of the City of Ottawa, or an owner or tenant of land in the City, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant
  • a Canadian citizen
  • not prohibited from voting by law
If not a resident of the City of Ottawa, to vote for a school board Trustee, the elector must be an owner or tenant of residential property in the area of jurisdiction of the school board, who does not support any other board.A person is eligible to be a candidate for Mayor or City Councillor if they are:
  • a resident of the City of Ottawa, or an owner or tenant of land in the City of Ottawa, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • at least 18 years old; and
  • not legally prohibited from voting.
A candidate must be eligible as of the day they are nominated and must remain eligible through the election period, and, if elected, through the term of office. A person is eligible to be a candidate for School Board of Trustee if they are:
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • at least 18 years old;
  • a resident within the board's area of jurisdiction;
  • a supporter of that school board; and
  • not legally prohibited from voting.
