Description (Service)

Intervenor services for adults who are Deafblind

  • provides the person who is Deafblind with accurate information in an appropriate manner to enable them to make choices, plan future actions, communicate successfully, navigate their environment and achieve as much independence as possible

Can be used to assist adults who are Deafblind with:

  • communications to access services (such as going to the bank or shopping) or to participate in the community (such as going to the library or taking part in a community group)
  • accessing and sharing accurate information during important meetings (such as medical appointments or meeting with a lawyer) to support informed decision making
  • learning how to use community services, such as public transportation, more independently
  • conducting daily activities

Emergency intervenor service:

  • program that allows CNIB's DeafBlind clients to contact an intervenor if they are in an emergency situation
  • Emergency Communication Kits containing items to assist a person who is Deafblind and allow the first responder/hospital staff to communicate until an intervenor arrives

Eligibility
    To be eligible for access to MCCSS-funded Intervenor Services, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a current resident of Ontario
  • not be attending secondary school, and be diagnosed with both hearing and visual impairments that are non-corrective and meet the following criteria:
    HearingThe hearing impairment must include at least one of the following criteria:
  • Hearing impairment is 41dB or greater at one or more frequencies in the range of 500 Hz - 4000 Hz in the better ear;
  • Speech audiometry test demonstrated a word discrimination score of 80% or lower at 60-70 dB; and/or;
  • The presence of an auditory dysfunction is strongly indicated
    VisionThe visual impairment must include at least one of the following criteria:
  • Visual acuity of no better than 20/70 in the better eye after correction;
  • Visual field restrictions to 20 degrees or less; and/or;
  • Reduced visual abilities due to neurological issues including cortical/cerebral visual impairments, delayed visual maturation, or hemianopsia.
