Description (Service)

Community-based agency dedicated to the long-term support of people affected by aphasia, a language disorder

  • programs provided by speech-language pathologists, social workers, and communicative disorders assistants in partnership with other community-based professional colleagues and trained volunteers to help people adjust to living with aphasia and regain active participation in the community
  • services are also available for people with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA)
  • for services in French, connect with the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa


Services

Introductory groups

  • ​for people who are re-entering the community following rehabilitation/day hospital treatment.
  • meetings between the person with aphasia, a family member/friend, and a group of 3 to 4 people facilitated by professionals

Virtual communication groups

  • conversations facilitated by speech-language staff in small groups of people who have aphasia.
  • focus is put on communication, sharing and exchange of ideas by any means: speech, gesture, drawing, facial expression and body language

PPA caregiver groups

  • monthly meetings for spouses and family members facilitated by a social worker
  • available to families of individuals currently participating in the communication program group

Social work support

  • for clients and families attending a PPA program

Individual speech-language therapy

  • therapy provided by speech-language staff
  • focused on everyday situations

Conversation coaching

  • one-on-one sessions for couples/family members facilitated by a speech-language staff
  • focused on hands-on techniques for more effective communication with each other

Create a Life History/Communication Book

  • with a speech-language staff member
  • aims to facilitate communication with family, friends and other participants in ACO programs

Workshops and information seminars

  • customized to participants' needs


Virtual programs require internet connection and computer/tablet. Device lending program available for those participating in an ongoing program (inventory subject to change).


Hours Mon-Fri 9 am-5 pm
Eligibility Individuals 18 years and older with aphasia as a result of a stroke or head injury or other brain damage and the families, friends, and caregivers of adults with aphasia and related communication difficulties

Languages English, French
Application Referral from healthcare professionals, community agencies, family members, friends or people with aphasia.Completion and submission of the English Referral Form or French: Formulaire de Demande de Service
