HOW'S YOUR LEGAL HEALTH? Linking Health Literacy and Legal Capability

May 27, 2015 - 8:30am - 1:00pm

Centre Richelieu-Vanier, 300 Peres Blancs, Ottawa

OUR 4TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS SOLD OUT! Looking forward to seeing you all and discussing our Legal Health.

Vulnerable communities face barriers when trying to get information and help in both the health and justice sectors. However, by addressing the literacy challenges of vulnerable people there have been significant improvements to accessing health information in Ontario over the past 30 years. In contrast, the justice sector has moved far more slowly to acknowledge the systemic barriers faced by vulnerable people who need access to legal information.

This half-day conference will identify promising practices and ideas from the health sector, draw parallels to similar work by public legal education and information (PLE) providers in Ontario, and identify some opportunities and strategies for building upon or adapting learnings from the health sector into the practice of public legal education and information.

Our keynote speaker will be Kristina Brousalis, Manager for PLE Capacity Building at Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO).

Our panellists will discuss innovations and promising practices:

  • Colleen Sym, Executive Director at Halton Community Legal Services (Georgetown)
  • Ryan Fritsch, Policy Counsel for the Mental Health and Addictions Strategy at Legal Aid Ontario
  • Jack McCarthy, Executive Director at Somerset West Community Health Centre (Ottawa)

There will be lots of opportunity for participation as we explore our legal health.
