Counselling Resources for Persons with Precarious Immigration Status

About this resource

This resource will enable front-line service providers to improve services for clients who have a precarious immigration status and who may face barriers to accessing counselling services and mental health resources.

211 - Community Information Centre of Ottawa

Connects individuals to a full range of social, government and health resources, e.g. emotional health, financial issues, family recreation programs, coping with disabilities, stress and bereavement, employment skills, citizenship, parenting and child care, support for seniors, sexuality, etc.

311 - Ottawa, City Operations

Information line provides information about accessing emergency services, and provides municipal government resource information.

Assaulted Women’s Helpline

Provides confidential and anonymous telephone crisis counselling, information and support, referrals to emergency shelters, legal information and community services, safety planning, and culturally appropriate resources for abused women Services offered in 154 languages. 

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

A client-centered, recovery-oriented mental health delivery service model. A team of mental health professionals, including a psychiatrist, provide community based treatment and support to persons with serious mental illness and significant functional impairment. 

CALACS Francophone d’Ottawa

Support services for survivors of sexual violence

Canadian Mental Health Association

Integrated community mental health support services for individuals with a severe and persistent mental illness who are homeless or at risk of homelessness with complex needs.  Services include outreach, case management, housing, concurrent disorders treatment program, health promotion, vocational support services.

Carlington CHC

Helps people increase control over and improve their health and the health of the community as a whole, and deals with a wide range of issues and concerns that affect health via their Medical, Counselling, Health Promotion and the Assertive Community Treatment programs. These programs include: workshops, drops-ins, support groups, community meetings, training, outreach, counselling, education, problem solving, advocacy and support for community initiatives. While most services are offered in both English and French, cultural interpretation is available and some groups are offered in other languages.

Catholic Centre for Immigrants

Community-based services for immigrants, refugees, and newcomers, including orientation programs, language and skills training to facilitate employment, and programs to welcome newcomers to the community.  Multilingual counsellors.  Serves clients regardless of immigration status in Canada.

Catholic Family Services

Individual, couple, family and group counselling, counselling services for newcomers, victims of torture, sexual abuse survivors, adults from dysfunctional families. Multilingual counsellors may provide interpretation.

Centres de services communautaires de Vanier CSC

A multi-service, community-based resource centre, which recognizes the importance of responding to the diversity of needs within local communities and pays particular attention to francophone members of the community who are most vulnerable and at risk.

Centretown CHC (Health Services)

Provides a full range of quality health and social services to families and individuals via one-on-one services, personal development groups, and community level involvement. While most services are offered in both English and French, cultural interpretation is available and some groups are offered in other languages. Through active community engagement, the Centre strives to respond to local needs and deliver tailored services and contributes to the collective effort of improving individual and community health by addressing underlying conditions.

Chrysalis House

Transition house provides emergency shelter and crisis support, counselling, and housing, legal and parenting supports to abused women and their children. English only. 

City of Ottawa – Dept. of Housing & Social Services

Provides emergency shelter in a supportive environment to homeless families or individuals and assistance in obtaining appropriate long term affordable housing. Interpretation available.

Community Mediation Ottawa

Community Mediation Ottawa supports the community by offering confidential, impartial, accessible conflict resolution services to all Ottawa residents who cannot normally afford such resources. Volunteer, experienced mediators facilitate a conversation between two or more people who are having a disagreement, to support them in identifying a mutually satisfactory solution. As parties in the mediation process develop their own solutions, they can be more satisfying and longer lasting than solutions decided or imposed by an outsider. Volunteer Mediators are drawn from the community and abide by standards set out by the Ontario Community Mediation Coalition.

Cornerstone Housing for Women

Emergency shelter for 58 homeless women or women at risk of homelessness. Counselling support and crisis intervention.

Distress Centre of Ottawa and Region

A confidential telephone listening and crisis intervention service. Educational services are available to schools and community groups on a variety of topics including suicide prevention and crisis intervention. 

Drug and Alcohol Helpline

Confidential information and referral service providing detailed descriptions of drug and alcohol treatment resources in Ontario, including how to access.

Eastern Ottawa CRC

Works in a progressive and collaborative manner to provide a wide range of supportive and empowering community services. This is achieved through the proactive efforts of a dedicated, client-centered and compassionate team who is committed to promoting a strong, healthy and equitable community.

Family Services Ottawa

Counselling is provided by professional counsellors and social workers to families and individuals having difficulties with couple, parent-child, family or individual relationships.

Fem’Aide

A free, confidential 24 hour support and crisis line for French-speaking women, victims and survivors of violence of any form.

Immigrant Women’s Services Ottawa

Crisis Intervention and counselling services for culturally diverse women who are victims and survivors of violence. Services to enable immigrants and refugees to integrate into Canadian society. Offers ASL interpretation services free of charge for clients who are victims of domestic violence, sexual violence or human trafficking. Interpretation available.  Serves clients regardless of immigration status in Canada.

Interval House

Transition house provides emergency shelter and crisis support, counselling, and housing, legal and parenting supports to abused women and their children. English only.

Jewish Family Services

Full service, non-sectarian agency offering more than 65 programs and services to children, youth, adults and seniors, as individuals, couples, families or groups. Multilingual counsellors. Serves clients regardless of immigration status in Canada.
